The New Year is in full swing and if you're like most people who have made resolutions to lose weight and get fit this year you've probably started out strong by working out, eating better, doing cardio, attending group exercise classes and making strides towards your goal.
But, all of a sudden you got back into your work schedule, family commitments happened and life just got in the way and you've gotten off track.
You've now entered the danger zone where you just might be ready to give up on your goal.
But, what happened to your motivation in just these few short weeks?
As a fitness professional for over 11 years I've worked with clients who had the best intentions and while many went on to reach their fat loss and fitness goals there are those who for whatever reason didn't.
So, what's the difference between those who achieve their goals versus those who fail?
Most would think it's a matter of motivation. However, it's deeper than that.
See, motivation is good but temporary because it comes from something (or someone) outside of you.
The secret to achieving your goals is actually INSPIRATION.
Inspiration is what comes from within.
It's something you have deep down within you.
When you are inspired you will have all the motivation you need to see your goals through.
When you are inspired you won't quit when life throws obstacles in your path.
When you are inspired nothing can stop you from getting to your goal.
When you are inspired you play to win!
I have worked with clients who swore up and down how badly they wanted a goal. But, their actions told a much different story.
They were motivated but not inspired.
Here's a little way to see if you are truly inspired to achieve your goals.
Ask yourself these 2 questions:
What are you willing to do to reach your goal?
What are you willing to not do to reach your goal?
Sounds too simple but you'll be surprised at what these questions will reveal to you.
It's the difference between SHOULD and COULD.
The SHOULD's make up what you're not willing to do.
You know you SHOULD make changes to lose those 15 lbs you've been struggling with
You know you SHOULD eat better rather than telling yourself you'll start 'tomorrow' or on the 'new year',
You know you SHOULD exercise more instead of making excuses for the bazillion reasons why you don't have the time or the energy or how busy you are.
You know what you SHOULD do but the real question is COULD you?
The COULD's make up what you are willing to do.
You COULD track your diet in order to gain clarity and understanding of what works for you and what doesn't.
You COULD go to the gym or workout at home regularly to get the exercise you need to reach your goal.
You COULD make the changes that'll get you from where you are now to where you want to be
You COULD work with a coach that will help you stay on track and accountable to reaching your goals.
You COULD announce to your inner circle of family, friends, co-workers and on Facebook that you're going to drop those 15 lbs, get leaner, stronger, in your best shape with more energy than ever
Motivation is good but it's simply not enough to get you through the times when life gets tough (and it will, believe me).
If you're not doing the very things necessary to reach your goals then perhaps you simply don't want your goals badly enough.
However, sometimes you need a little push in the right direction.
If you're currently at a crossroad where you aren't making the progress you hoped for and you're starting to doubt that you'll ever achieve your New Years Resolution to lose the weight and get in your best shape it's time to ask yourself the harder questions.
Are you going to be just another one of the 'coulda, shoulda, woulda but didn't' crowd of excuse makers who simply give up and complain about all the reasons why it didn't work this year (yet again) and resolve to being unfit, unhealthy?
Or are you sick and tired of looking in the mirror and seeing a reflection staring back that you barely recognize?
Are you ready to say 'enough is enough' and to finally stand up and DO something about it this year?
If so, start by writing down just 3 things you can and will do today to move you from where you are now to where you want to be.
It doesn't matter how big or small these are as long as they will get you 1 step closer to your goal.
Sometimes little changes make the biggest difference.
Cross off each one as you complete it.
Repeat this process every day and you'll be amazed at how fast you will progress toward your goal.
With inspiration you'll never have to look for anything or anyone outside of yourself to achieve any goal you want in your life.
Now, find your inspiration!
