Overeating: What Is The Answer If Food Isn't?

Eating is natural and it is a way to feed the body with nutrients. Nutrients provide the body with energy to help you last throughout the day. You will also notice that food is always present in social activities such as dinners and events with loved ones. Whether it is during a funeral where people are in grief, or it is to celebrate an occasion, food is always present. This just shows the level of connection between food and our emotions.

Unfortunately for some people, they feel that it is required for them to eat even when they are feeling full. People usually overeat in order to compensate their emotions, or as an attempt to calm down unstable emotions.

According to a statistic made by the National Institute of Health, around 3% of Americans which makes up to over 9 million people suffer from Binge Eating Disorder, which is also known as compulsive overeating. Compulsive overeating or Binge Eating Disorder could cause plenty of health complications such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, as well as immense feeling of shame and guilt.

Sufferers of compulsive overeating or Binge Eating Disorder are also known as emotional eaters. Emotional eaters eat based on their emotions, not with their hunger. Any emotion could lead them to binging such as boredom, being sad or lonely, and even when they are stressed and depressed. Here are some ways to stop overeating.

Know The Signs Of Overeating: When you know the signs, you can recognize that you are actually overeating emotionally. Some signs are eating even when you are full, binge when you feel upset, stressed and distressed, and later feel guilt, shame and disgust with yourself.

Find Out What Triggers Your Overeating Habits: Once you know the reason that makes you binge, you can handle the situation better by keeping your emotions checked. Learn how to deal with your emotions. Every time you feel your trigger emotion, stop yourself from eating and do something more productive.

Replace Food With Other Rewards: Since we were little, we get comfort through eating. This habit could continue on where you tend to think eating as a way to reward or comfort yourself. Instead of splurging on food and indulging away, treat yourself to a relaxing spa vacation, get yourself a new dress and find any other way besides eating.

Know that you are not alone, and you can always talk to those who understand. It is best for you to know that food is not the answer to everything.
